Amid Iran news, DOD just gave reporters 1 hour notice to get to the Pentagon for a press briefing with two senior officials worth hearing, but it will be off-camera (sorry, can't watch online) and on-background (sorry, can't quote by name.) On the Friday of Memorial Day weekend.

And now OSD has publicly posted on the names of the background briefers, still saying the briefing is on background...

It means reporters agree they can quote what is said, but won't use the names of the briefers, only identify them as "senior defense official" or "senior military official." Usually because they're not the secretary level, or topic is controversial. Lately... it's just CYA.
