This here and now situation has me thinking abt forms of intellectual erasure : not citing someone’s work but citing others, not crediting ideas appropriately, acting as if your idea is new - reinventing the wheel. It’s exhausting & frustrating - and there’s no penalty.

To the guy on my flight who got out of his seat and marched down the aisle to tell a beleaguered mother to quiet her fussy toddler: may you one day be stuck on a flight with your own inconsolable toddler and suddenly realize, with searing clarity, what an asshole you once were.

Can someone please report out and write a post-mortem of how this piece came to be published, beginning with the pitch, through editing and copy editing? Did no one sound alarms along the way?

Precisely. Hype is a ratchet. Brings $ to advance your ideas & yourself. Its a zero sum game so harms others and their ideas. Being found wrong - 10 or 20 yrs later - doesn't ever push you back as hard. Also those competing ideas are dead by then. Net positive for the hyper.

Certainly no deterrent consequence here. Most prominent promoters of the 1990s now control one of medicine's most expensive and underperforming research fronts.
