Separations happen at this facility, at some point. While we were there we saw kids who had not been separated & were still with their parents. Other kids, who’d either been separated or come across the border by themselves were housed in a cage with other children, no adults.

We saw kids eating snacks, drinking milk, snuggling with their parents, & in some cases playing with other kids. No one could leave the cage, freely. Cages are locked. The border agents seemed empathic but were adamant: parents endangered their kids by entering illegally.

To be clear: We were invited to take a look around. We could not bring in a camera or any recording device. We could only take notes. We were given about 15 minutes to document what we saw.

Furthermore, they wanted us to make it clear that people detained in those cages are not being treated like animals.

Bingo. One difference: **most** of the minors came here with their parents. But some did cross the border alone, as daunting as that sounds.
