In my mind’s eye it’s a blueish grey car coat. The sort only worn by men of a certain age but advertised by younger men in catalogues.

Anyway, it’s ridiculous that him just accidentally being caught on camera in a dowdy coat & clutching some carrier bags is the moment of greatest joy he brought me because he was one of our finest comedy writers. But there you go. RIP Mr Norden.

Once or twice a year, that clip comes back to me and I go on a vain search of YouTube for it. I’ve never found it. & I’ve never met anyone else who remembers it. But it exists.

My fav It’ll Be Alright On The Night clip: a news reporter doing a piece to camera on a shopping centre escalator. Behind him, a shopper realises he’s caught on camera. He can’t go anywhere; he’s on an escalator. His awkwardness draws the eye. Especially as he is Denis Norden.

People keep saying to me, “ah, but you told this lie or that lie on telly” forgetting that in every case I owned up really quickly. Because owning up was a punchline. People thought a dishwasher tab was a Smartie for about 10 seconds. The longest a lie lasted was an ad break!

More useful in your line of work than mine, although I do see it as a sign that I'm good and relaxed.

Well some people are having fun with it, for sure. But it makes sense in context.

Ta! 1 quibble. The show is at City Hall not the Theatre Royal.

It's probably the only joke in the show that isn't spoiled by people mentioning the topic. And, for obvious reasons, I ask people not to spoil the show. So people gravitate towards mentioning that.

I will, if you come to the show. Like a lot of stand-up, it works in the context of a show and isn't a standalone gag. It ties a lot of loose threads in the show together.
