Oh look. has suddenly discovered that referring to other countries as shitholes isn't a great idea. Remember that time he called Russia a "dystopic shithole since the dawn of history"?

The reason why Trump saying it is problematic is three-fold 1) America's image in the world 2) America's self-image as a country based on immigration 3) Trump trying to prevent black people from entering. If he says it out loud the courts will turn down every single of his laws

Also: I think I can come up with "a couple" instances of Russian journalists calling America names without it making Putin calling other countries shitholes ok I mean I get it Barro uses bad language but please don't compare journalists to heads of state. It's not the same.

And I hate Josh Barro just for the record. He's a total tool.

when did I say Putin calling other countries shitholes would be ok? or that it would be the same level of inappropriate as some Russian journalist saying it?

If I tweeted that a country was a shithole and then wrote an article about how it's terrible for the president to also call countries shitholes, I'd expect to be called out for hypocrisy.

The general point is that Donald Trump's racist comments are not an anomaly. It's kind of what most Americans are as a people.

The problem with what Trump said isn't that he calls the countries names. Calling a country shitty isn't racist. He calls countries with brown people shitty whereas Barro called out Russia for bad politics. There's a difference.

If you called a country (say the US) shitty for say rampant capitalism, mass incarceration or Pence's gay conversion camps, then that wouldn't be racist. And Barro wasn't racist. It's not about the shittiness. Trump cares about the people from those countries being brown

Ergo calling out Barro for his LANGUAGE is beside the point. It's the same obfuscation tactic Ben Shapiro used on Fox News yesterday, pretending liberals are outraged about the bad language not the racism It's about the racism. Not the poopy word.

In short: Barro wasn't racist. He used a bad word. Trump is racist. So please don't equate the two. They aren't equal.

Barro said Russians in general had nothing to be proud of. He absolutely did not stop at Putin or politics. Nothing wrong with calling him out for that. Especially when he's pretending to be oh-so-concerned by Trump's racism.

I didn't "equate" Trump and Barro. I pointed out that they used the same word to describe countries they don't like - and then Barro pretended to be offended by it when the president did it.

Ah, the timeless moto of liberals: it's different when we do it.

It is irrelevant whether Barro is racist or not. I don't know him. My tweet only serves to point out his hypocritical behaviour, which is perfectly okay to do, in my opinion.

Trump doesn't like those countries Trump doesn't like that the people from those countries are brown Norway is a democratic socialist state. The reason Trump likes it isn't because they have great healthcare. He likes it because the people from Norway are white.

And I don't know what to tell you if you think Barro is offended by the word then all I can tell you is: Barro uses that word himself. I doubt he's offended by the world because of that. I'm pretty pretty sure he's offended because Trump says all people from Haiti have AIDS

Hm I agree I think you can be just as angry about the name-calling as e.g. Botswana since you're from Russia I would feel personally attacked too I spoke up because I feel it misrepresents the reason for those journalist's ire but I already said that...
