(7/7): How to Become a Federal Criminal (amzn.to/2YRlWkw) is the product of lots of this work that doesn’t fit into a tweet. I hope it will make you laugh and learn, and have great conversations. Or at least look good in your bathroom or whatever. But truly: thank you.

THREAD (1/7): On the occasion that is the night before my book’s publication date, I thought I’d share a few thoughts with all of you (whether new to @CrimeADay or a long-time follower).

(2/7): In 2014, I started this feed to count every federal crime on the books. Nobody had ever done it, so thought I’d try. I started with Woodsy Owl (§ 711a), because… I mean, come on, it’s a federal crime about a cartoon owl.

(3/7): For a while, I was tweeting to a just small group—25 or 50 of you. It was cheese crimes, donkey crimes, a serious one here and there. But even back then, you were a funny group and made it worthwhile for me to find a new crime to post each day.

(4/7): As the years went on, I deepened my research. I spent more time with the statutes, congressional hearing transcripts and legislative history documents to find better and better crimes and to understand where they came from.

(5/7): Turns out, it's not easy to do every day. There were some close calls, but I’ve never missed a day. A crime a day. Posting one from the hospital the night my son was born was probably the closest call I’ve had.

(6/7): Next month will be the 5-year anniversary of the project. A federal crime every day for 5 years will be 1826 crimes. I hope to get through 1826 more, and 1826 after that.

(8): Thank you all for making this such a great week by sharing photos of your copies of HOW TO BECOME A FEDERAL CRIMINAL. Most of all, I love your stories of how nervous you've made unsuspecting bookstore employees by asking for it. Keep it up. You've been wonderful.
