& dyslexia support groups are evidence that many parents are deeply concerned about the substantial numbers of children failing to read.

1/ Tchrs are currently not provided w/ science of reading, or best ways to systematically & explicitly impart literacy skills. Their ITE was steeped in whole language ideology, hence most Ts aren’t well-placed to ID poor decoders (who can be great at guessing from context/pics)..

2/ The PSC will be instrumental as a catalyst for change - from Whole Language misconceptions to an evidence-informed understanding of how kids learn to read, why some can’t, and what teachers can do to improve literacy outcomes for all. How could you possibly be against this?

Parents / carers/ medical professionals are naive in that we thought this was the case. Aussie kids are relying on us to get this right

If Ts collectively had phonics knowledge we wouldn’t see failure rates on the PSC like in SA. While providing essential data, it won’t solve the knowledge problem. ⬆️ knowledge AND the PSC are the solution, not either in isol. PSC data won’t improve unless T knowledge does.

The PSC guides the T who has good phonics knowledge to do more explicit PCG teaching at a higher dose & it tells leadership the targeted support required for teachers to improve knowledge/practice. Specialist support with reading instruction is only required for a very small #.

Absolutely! And also the forum of the International Foundation for Effective Reading Instruction where Emily Hanford's work has been noted - amongst so many others internationally:

We should expect our graduating teachers to be well informed about scientific research into reading, our children deserve nothing less.

Who are the reading specialists if not teachers or teaching assistants? For T Ed’s/academics to suggest otherwise is churlish.

Only 4% of university units have a specific focus on early instruction, while 70% do not mention any of the five key elements of reading instruction degrees miss the mark on reading instruction. via

'Phonics denialists will use ad hominem to dismiss this report.' Although I've yet to meet a teacher who left Uni feeling prepared to teach reading, particularly Jnr Prim.

At last, an audit that lays the story bare. This is a clear & clinical report, based on publicly available documents re how Oz universities approach the important business of pre-service teacher prep for reading instruction. It shifts the debate from the general to the specific.

Back on the horse: Looking forward to two days of workshops in Wodonga and Shepparton ably assisted by Wednesday and Thursday this week. We are almost to the end of the series but there are still a few spaces left for Mildura:
