I've been thinking about the nine ppl found dead in Mississippi's Parchman prison for days now, and I don't know what it's going to take for this country to actually understand that prison is one of the worst things our society does to ppl. There is no justice to be found there.

America's not interested in justice, not when it comes to black ppl. We've convinced ourselves that ppl in prison deserve the heinous treatment they receive because they're guilty(!) the same way chattel slavery was justified because blacks were property not ppl

Prison is not about justice, as you know; it's about punishment as horrible as possible, and cruelty. We are a vengeful people, plain and simple.

It’s also about profit. We need to end for-profit prisons. People shouldn’t make money off of keeping people in jail.

Putting the tragedy of the 9ppl in Miss aside. If not prison, where/how do we find justice and keep order?

Restorative and rehabilitative justice that addresses the gaps in convicts' social/emotional/economic background that got them jailed in the first place.
Idea should be that you come out of time served better equipped for society & nonrecidivist.
Rather than caged labor force

Prison is very high on my list of things we take for granted and that future generations will see as evidence of our monstrousness and moral rot.

the majority of the time, prison takes people who made bad choices and turns them into career criminals. some cases deserve to rot in there, but most could becoming contributing members of society, at a fraction of the cost than keeping them incarcerated.
