Bottom line. If we expect 12 hour intense, non stop shifts we will get burn out. No coincidence AE staff & GPs have highest rates.

not taking about fatigue. Taking about burn out. Fatigue related to age, sleep, shift pattern. Burnout directly related to intensity of work (which includes but not entirely dependent on hours worked).

It’s the intensity not length of shift which is the determinant

We have to change the norm back to what humans can tolerate. The shifts harm clinicians.

We need to now change the dialogue. 12hr shifts have to include ‘down time’. We have to build in breaks during the day. Have to limit number decisions made per shift and so on.

Bottom line. Burn out directly correlates with intensity of work. Resilience training, mindfulness, peer support groups and so on, are irrelevant unless work load is sorted.
