To cut off the "madness of crowds" defense that will surely ensue: chants aren't hiding places, they aren't vortexes that pull in unwilling participants. Chants are social mechanisms that allow multiple people to share credit for a single instance of talk in an interaction.

We don't need to be defensive about the fact that millions of people in Britain speak a mixture of languages in different proportions. English-teaching lessons have been cut. Racism causes disadvantage not people's use of language.
