A year later these questions to remain without answers. The safety of people forcefully returned to a country at civil war by the Libyan "coastguard" - with the financial support of the EU - can not be guaranteed by UNHCR. There are far too many gaps in their system.

I wished media would understand the vessel spilling oil off is a dry bulk carrier and not a tanker. The oil being spilled is fuel, not cargo. Yes, a single cargo vessel holds that much fuel, just to transport stuff around the globe.

This is a true adventure story of someone using a bicycle. But remember, Global South ship crews are regularly at sea for 8-12 months. Because of covid, thousands of seafarers are stuck and can't be repatriated. Some without pay. There also have been even more suicides than usual

It is important to remember that around 35,000 migrants have died attempting to enter Europe since 1993. Over 27,000 of those who died drowned at sea. The vast majority were from countries effected by war. The sea is already a graveyard of hopes and dreams.

More and more shocking videos of police and state violence turn up from where the dictatorship seems very intent on suppressing dissent after the questionable elections yesterday.

And we all know who should pay for it: countries with the highest cumulative CO2 emissions from the past, such as the US and many EU countries. Time to pay

This is beyond words. their city has been reduced to ashes; 150 have been killed, 1000s wounded, 300,000 made homeless: the people of Beirut are now shot at for demonstrating and expressing legitimate anger.

What happens to refugees who get returned to Libya by the Libyan "Coastguard"? 3 young men were shot by the "coastguard" on July 29. Thousands are missing after being returend. The "coastguard" remains involved in kidnapping, trafficking and torture.

12/. People intercepted by the Libyan Coast Guard are sent to detention centres where they face torture As part of the same strategy to reduce irregular arrivals in Europe, countries have increasingly withdrawn patrols. NGOs that have stepped in to fill the gap have been blocked

The floating border fence Greece wants to install off Lesbos is legal acc to EU law, but access to asylum procedures must remain. How a fence and asylum access will be reconciled in practice is a mystery to me. I just see another project to make asylum even more inaccessible.
