Most Likely to Succeed is fantastic
youtu.be/JE5XRrfetu4
I think I have @webdevMason to thank for recommending it
Basically they get 12/13 year olds to do ridiculously good projects that we never expect them to be able to do, or let them try

Like write, act and direct their own plays
One girl comes in to the school and hardly speaks, but she's really engaged in it, so the teachers get her to direct it, and she's a totally different person by the end
Pretty cool to see

One class makes this humongous mechanism to exhibit to their parents that explains their theories of why civilizations rise and fall, and a boy says it'll be the greatest moment of his life when he shows his bit,

but he isn't able to finish in time, so he works on it for a month afterwards and during summer
Pretty different to bored kids that don't see the point of what they're doing and never concentrate properly
No "will we ever actually use this in real life?" question

I think I've talked about this somewhere before, but Twitter is not good for this..
The biggest difference there is the kids do stuff for a reason, with a sense of purpose
They don't just learn about ancient Athens for a test, regurgitate it, and forget everything

They learn about it, write, star in and direct play with everything they learn, and show it to their parents and friends
They learn about why civilizations rise and fall, and learn about gear ratios and torque so they can explain it to people

They don't write an essay that [if they're lucky their teacher will print out] only their teacher will read, once, and throw it in the bin
What's the point in that?
Where's the accomplishment? The joy you get from doing something meaningful?
There's nothing

[for some reason the school is called High Tech High, but it's not centered around iPads AFAIK]
imagine if you learned at work by someone lecturing you for hours at a time, with 5 minute breaks each hour
That's school

[apparently the education history in the film is wrong/iffy, but the rest is good
apart from self driving cars, that's not happening any time soon]
