The bullet passed through the Sergeants lip. Chapman shot again but missed and was disarmed. Perkins recovered from his wounds and later retired on a police pension. He died aged 53.

They were tackled by one of the choir, Harry Smeeton Sharman, who managed to capture Chapman. He was taken to Clarendon Park station by Sergeant Perkins and a colleague, however as Perkins was frisking Chapman the latter pulled out a gun and shot Perkins in the face.

Leicester Borough Policeman Joseph Perkins, photographed with his wife and children. In November 1903 Alfred Chapman and Herbert Lester were caught red handed rifling through the pockets of coats left in the vestry of St John’s Church, Clarendon Park, Leicester.
