Much of what gets preached as “good writing” adheres to super Western cultural ideals about individualism, told from a privileged perspective. I wonder how many stories we’ve lost because people confused “trying to survive” with “passive/has no agency”

I’ll have to check it out at some point. I’m hoping to reap the reward of it when it’s all completed- hopefully I’ll get there 😊- all the best, Liz!

That sounds incredibly productive. I’ll have to give that a go when things settle in September maybe. Mine’s becoming richer. I’ve actually fallen in love with it all over again- I’ve spent months hating it. I’ve got a deadline to meet at the end of the month and I’m hopeful ☺️

It was actually a really interesting experience- like being aware of all the things that were unsaid, but were implied. I hope that make sense in some way!

In hindsight, I think the kid only approached me about it and opened up because they knew I understood where they were coming from whereas I don’t think they thought my non-BAME colleagues would in comparison.

I had an insight into this at work once when I was trying to explain ideas of honour and reputation to my colleagues when talking about a BAME kid. The point is I had to explain it and I understood the weight of what the kid was up against.

I agree with you. All the stuff you can’t see shapes your world view and rationalises your actions and motives, which might actually be totally alien to someone else.

I stumbled across this the other day, but I can’t remember where from. In light of ’s findings, this is something to bear in mind when writing and also one of the reasons why publishing needs to be diverse behind the scenes as well as on the page.

The report comes as no surprise but it's been on my mind all day. Here are my thoughts on the findings: PART 1 - It's about REPRESENTATION, not diversity. (PART 2 to follow with a shout out to projects and players making a difference)
