The Rose Periwinkle paints a pretty pink picture, but so much more lies beneath its vibrant surface. Chemicals isolated from this plant revolutionised the treatment of leukaemia and Hodgkin's disease. It's another reminder of why plant conservation is so vital.

This Costus species belongs to the ginger family, otherwise known as Zingiberaceae. It hails from the tropics but you can see it right here in the Bicentennial Conservatory. We love the cheerful red inflorescence and yellow 'beak'.
