We’re going to be extremely blunt here: BSA is NOT going to be a reactive activism organization. We are trying to redefine Leftist “organizing” for our current time, but we are going to need way more help from you all in order to accomplish this.

What is being attempted down in Jackson, Mississippi cannot simply be reduced to “co-ops.” is mapping out a bottom-up, strategy in PRACTICE. BSA is here to both showcase this, and inspire + facilitate similar movements all throughout the country.

We’re not just talking about democratic workplaces... We’re talking about Community Land Trust initiatives (taking land + providing permanent, affordable, and “green” housing)... We’re talking about mutual aid networks... One day, we could be talking about a political party...

The fact of the matter here is that as great as these things are, time is of the essence. We’re going to need much more than $30k in these next few months to effectively hit on both a mass education front and an organizing front. Education PLUS institution building takes WORK.

You have – in BSA and all of its organizers – an incubator for truly revolutionary change. We’re not just trying to show the world what is possible in theory, but in practice as well. It’s going to take a lot to do this, and we’re asking for your help.

To the Leftist celebrities and folks in academia who’ve been following us quietly: Please use your platforms, influence, and resources to help us start a real movement that is not only cultural, but economic. Some of you are in key positions to help change the world. Use them!

A lot of people are so thankful for work in this broken system that they are greatful to their direct employer. Even if they recognize the system is broken. Its fucked up but it’s true.

“Most people” ≠ “a lot of people,” but the latter statement is correct for the most part; no one is denying this. This also doesn’t change the fact that almost all of these people you mention are being exploited.

I never said they weren’t. But taking someone from being exploited and okay with that because they’re being satisfied in social/racial/religious issues to radical and willing to address their situation is usually not a straight line.

“But taking someone from being exploited and okay with that because they’re being satisfied in social/racial/religious issues to radical and willing to address their situation is usually not a straight line.” The struggle is actually in providing better job options/alternatives.

We won’t have to do too much convincing once we’ve built up truly democratic, socialist alternatives right next door. Building Socialism is easier said than done, though, and we’re going up against global Capitalism, so it’s going to take radical education + economic adjustment.

It’s also really fucked up we ask people at 16, 18, 20 to decide what they’re going to do for the rest of their lives.

How does the Preston Model undermine the capitalists class ? Is it not simply moving power from large to small capitalism. Additionally government and community organisations that take over capital functions can become exploitative in the same way as large businesses.

Your commentary here is like saying “bricks, wood, and hammers aren’t ‘homes.’” It’s not the tools themselves (isolated) that are supposed to be “socialist.” It’s how we use the tools that will determine whether or not we reach Socialism.

PS: WSDE co-ops are “socialist” at the micro level. They represent workers controlling the means of production. It’s when you move to the external relations of these firms that there are no socialistic guarantees. This is why cooperative labor must be developed politically.

This is so good. It's just one part of a whole set of moving parts. Create other land trusts to partner with. Create Trade Syndicates. When enough are linked, communication, sanitation, security, infrastructure, investment and even the nature of 'money' changes.
