A more simplified way to frame what's happening now: This isn't cancel culture. This is consequence culture. And some people hate the sudden accountability while others worry the focus will turn to them because they have much to be accountable for.

And shoutout to the institutions whose leadership looks like an incoming class of an expensive prep school (mostly white and economically privileged) who STILL don't think they have a problem. Y'all are the worst... and karma is coming for ya. 7/6

To listen and to learn requires that you shut up long enough to hear what is being said, evaluate, and apply what you've heard. Don't hold "listening and learning" sessions if you do not plan on doing either. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk. 6/6

"Listening and learning" sessions with no real actionable plan for systemic change is performative. Telling Black folx about all of the institutional limitations that you are currently facing in an institution that doesn't serve us is the opposite of listening and learning. 5/6

Any institution that benefits/benefitted from excluding & exploiting marginalized groups, esp. Black folx, and refuses to change is RACIST. This isn't up for debate. And the willful ignorance that has couched bliss is no more. Either you're against racism or you're for it. 4/6

If you are planning to "listen and learn" from Black people at this time, might I humbly suggest that you *actually* listen and not defend yourself every time your privilege and bias are confronted. Listening to reply =/= listening to understand. Know the difference. 3/6

Some institutions right now are afraid of becoming a trending topic so they are defaulting to "listening and learning" as a way to buy themselves time. The gag is they don't like what they are hearing because it upends the foundation that they've built their power upon. 2/6

Your daily reminder that institutional change requires... change. If your normal *is* anti-Black racist, you have to do something different. Any solution that does not address systemic problems is a short-term fix for problems that will inevitably return. A thread/

Free tip Tuesday: Get your website together👏🏽. It’s the first thing people see when trying to find info about your work especially during the pandemic. A lot of university, faculty, organization etc websites are lacking. Don’t make it harder for people to want to work w/ you
