The 2020 rail map for the Netherlands is out. Is there any wonder why we almost never drive? With a rail network like this, combined with OV Fiets, the train is almost always the best solution for intercity trips. And on some of these routes, trains run every 10 minutes!

Yesterday, a new part of the Utrecht light rail network opened. The link from Central Station to the University; 7.5km long. For a few hours everybody could try it. I did too and made a video impression.

Induced demand: replace over-capacity bendy buses with a tram, fill the tram. Of course people are trying it out, because this is the first operational day of the , but still great to see.

“Even when they are clean and silent, you don’t want your city centre full of cars.” Increasingly the Dutch - regardless of political conviction - are in favour of nearly car free city centres. Utrecht serves as an example.

Utrecht's new light rail is open to the public for the very first time this afternoon. Regular service starts Monday. View from the cabin into Utrecht.

Yes you should. But only including the traffic calming that is an inseparable part of that mixing.
