Today’s appalling attacks are a tragedy for all ethnic groups in Sri Lanka. But the risk of backsliding into armed conflict was a foreseeable consequence of the Government’s failure to address the legacy of war and end human rights abuse.

Why did the Court in Madrid refuse to accept obviously relevant expert evidence from one of Europe’s most experienced experts on public order policing? This hardly suggests a fair trial by an independent and impartial tribunal - as required by Article 6(1) of the ECHR.

As a former UN Special Rapporteur, I fully endorse the concerns outlined by the WUC, and the necessary conditions for meaningful UN inspections of the Chinese concentration camps in which hundreds of thousands of Uyghur are being arbitrarily detained.
