Checked the 6 colonies at school today, all queen right, and brimming with lovely bees! Enjoyed a bit of the sunshine collecting seed from our meadow & did a bit of planning for our exciting bee research project with . !

Overjoyed today, after inspecting the 🐝 Lots of food stored in the supers and lots of and nectar in the brood frames. 🐝 Still lots of eggs being laid and healthy brood to emerge. 🐝 All queens marked and power laying! πŸŒ»πŸƒπŸπŸƒπŸŒ»πŸƒπŸπŸƒπŸŒ» πŸ’›

It looks like a Hornet Mimic Hover Fly. It's friendly and good for your garden. πŸŒ»πŸƒπŸπŸƒπŸŒ»

'At the Hive Entrance' is a super book, by H Storch, as you say, you can learn so much from observing the entrance...the book goes through all the external signs of the wonderful internal 'goings on' in the hive, free download too!

I read the last night on the train. A perfect read to pick up, put down, read again, refer back to, lose your place and start again! πŸŒ»πŸƒπŸπŸƒπŸŒ»πŸƒπŸπŸƒπŸŒ»

Busy as! You can tell a lot about the health of a colony by observing at the hive entrance. One of the things we covered on the Autumn class

I'd be tempted to open a couple. Could the temperature soften the honey enough to run back and discolour the capping?

From the picture. Are you more concerned about the irregular outline, than cell colour?

Did you see any eggs? Does the queen have space to lay? If you feed them before they need it, they may fill the cells before the queen can lay in them.

I'd be inclined to agree with treating only if you need to, and not just because. We've had pollen in feeder eke's and will be putting syrup on in September. Think of the winter foragers's either being in capped brood now, or not yet laid, and those in the hive now being tired.

Has the queen been laying eggs between cells they've backfilled?

is a site which links with to stay connected when any spraying of crops is occurring, which may have an effect on local colonies. Great service, well worth a look, teamwork is the way forward.
