Yup, writing the first query letter is challenging. It gets easier. Hint: Make sure to indicate the conflicts.

It’s basically a back of book blurb with “ I am seeking representation for a (page # ) ( genre ) ( title ) followed by short blurb. If they want a summary they will indictate that on their query instructions.

Read lots and lots of back of book blurbs. You’re selling the book to the agent enough they want to look at your first page.

Me: After watching Tidying Up on Netflix, I’m only keeping things that spark joy. Hubby: Um....that’s me, right? Me: .... H: Hon? Me: Always.

And I am sure the tidying Marie would suggest placing your joy-givers in a lovely box that is artfully displayed. Q: Stand vibrators upright or lay flat?

Agents say lots of different & very contradictory things. Usually it just means “not what I was looking for” & insert excuse that makes the writer doubt their voice/skill/plot/pacing. My favorite “couldn’t figure out fiction from fact.” That’s a GOOD thing, right? *eyeroll*

If you’re not in a writing/critique group (and many of us are not) be VERY careful who you let read. People steal ideas. Friends lie or are jealous. Find someone who knows a lot about the craft. Good luck. It was my agent and editor who sharpened my skills the most.
