That's hardly an apolitical claim, either. Given the relative emissions, a nation earnestly concerned about transportation and climate should expand and subsidize rail transportation everywhere as an alternative over flying or driving. Or, you know, the Acela could be cheaper.

That the profitable line subsidizes less profitable lines should be obvious, but the net effect of "why is my thing expensive only to pay for something I don't use?" is to call for a curtailing of rural service in exchange for a discount to customers served.

By creating a coalition of progressives, labour, and black Americans, the New Deal coalition unified the American centre-left for the first time arguably since Reconstruction.

Given all the New Deal takes around today, let me just say that while FDR made implemented only extremely modest measures towards civil rights, the New Deal coalition he helped create pulled the Democratic Party inexorably in a pro-civil rights direction.

the main thing I get from this, besides the inevitable ravages of time and the accumulation of poor choices on my frame, is that in 2009 I & my peers were taking photos of each other with cameras and uploading them, and now it's all selfies on smartphones.

I strongly believe that in the era of looming climate crisis we need to reclaim traditional architecture in all of its myriad forms. It’s generally suited for the local environment, livable without electricity, made from local materials, and soulfully achingly beautiful

It seems unbearably banal to have to remind anyone that college students are specifically in college to learn how to be adults, growing pains and all, and yet here we are.
