It's very hard not to assume motives around suppression of data and the desire to paint an artificially rosy picture in the lead-up to an election. In a vaccuum, this is probably a sound political strategy. It also happens to be unscientific, deadly and unjustifiable.

The CDC reversed its guidance to say that people in close contact with a COVID-positive person don't need to get tested. This is not science. It’s politics. Politics that are dangerous to public health. It's indefensible.
