We have an ethical responsibility to talk about mental health. I grew up getting no education about mental health, and it had almost disastrous consequences for me and my family. It's a moral obligation to provide accessible education.

There’s no data showing active shooter drills are effective, but there is data showing they cause anxiety and depression in kids. Schools can opt to train adult staff, but let’s stop traumatizing kids. And let’s keep guns away from dangerous people.

Words matter, Mr. President. “These people” are our friends, neighbors, children, spouses. 1 in 5 Americans lives with a mental health condition. They’re not “monsters,” “the mentally ill” or “crazy people” – they’re us.

Have your kids write a letter to themselves to be read in June of the following year. Tell them to talk about goals and expected challenges & set themselves up to be successful. It is a great way for you to see what is really on their minds. Then I hand them back out in June.

“Our children spend time in school practicing lockdowns and active shooter drills, without understanding what can be done to prevent the need for these in the first place.” It doesn’t have to be this way. Students, staff, & parents can learn how to prevent tragedies.

“People w/ emotional, cognitive & behavioral problems...should be given the same respect & access to treatment as someone dealing w/ a sprain, a flu, or a cancer. Healthcare should be healthcare. But it’s not. And stigmatization is largely to blame.”
