By “timing” I mean that there was apparently an active pen register within HOURS of publication of an article containing leaked material. And unless they zeroed in on a suspect almost immediately, it would seem like the pen register must have targeted the reporter.

Hm, but there's been a lot of articles clearly using leaked SARs before? I'm not sure why you're starting the investigatory clock at the ~7th article published?

Fair point. I was assuming that because the pen register became active the same day as the article published, the article was what triggered them to seek the pen register.

I've a hard time believing they move fast enough to get a pen register up within a few hours, in a new investigation. Especially when having to go through the hurdles they, presumably still, have to go through when investigating a journo. But also generally.
