Blockchain is not a database, it's a protocol for syncing the databases. The point of a blockchain is not to "store" or "distribute" data, it is to make sure mutually distrusting parties are all on the same page.

A fun writeup of a chain-splitting bug and disclosure. A "chain-split" bug is possibly the worst type of bug a cryptocurrency could have, and yet, because its unique to cryptocurrencies, isn't something that is usually adequately addressed by security researchers in the space.
