The Alternative Department for Transport
I write about transport infrastructure and politics, mainly about cycling, the suppressed mode of transport! Lived in London and Berlin, now in the Netherlands.

Weirdly I've met Dutch left political people who have the same obsession with public transport, even to the detriment of cycling (and walking). What is it about buses that arouse such passion?!

There are t-shirts for sale up here with "Groningen, Holland" emblazoned across them... 🙄

Also perhaps some clips of Heute Show in YouTube? Not particularly simple language, but I think you'll like some of them. Here's a good segment tackling common hype about e-cars:

None of this is good we are inducing people to drive and its only zero-emission at the tale pipe. UKs energy gen is far from green. Also see trip hazard mess that is the charing stations that lock out active travel. e- is not green or clean

Sadly it only runs halfway along Helperzoom! I hope it will be extended all the way northwards.

Welcome to the Olympic (car) park! All these vehicles were stationary with their engines on.

1.4 billion on one roundabout and 10miles of road. For minimal gain. Surely there is a better way to spend money? That's what Manchester wants over 10 years for cycling and walking

Spotted in an antiques shop in Exeter. Is Your Journey Really Necessary? As pertinent now as it was during World War II.

Many thanks as ever to for spending hours on the info graphic. Amazing to see that the only traffic lights I came across were when I was cycling around the city of Assen. No stopping for lights from Groningen to Assen (>15 miles) or Assen to Hoogeveen (>20 miles)

Your impressions of Haren match mine, too much motor traffic (yes, peak times can be dreadful!). The new cycleway along Helperzoom in Groningen is indeed new, installed in the months before your visit. A huge improvement over painted lanes on a bus route!

Every single cyclist in the UK could break every possible cycling-specific traffic law at every opportunity and we'd still kill and maim a tiny fraction of those killed and maimed by drivers. So go fuck yourself,

Again, the most annoying questions of the year were: 1. Amanda, how far with your bicycles?🙄🙄 2. But Amanda, do you think bicycle riding is possible in Kampala?🙄🙄 3. But where is your helmet? 😒😒 Hope 2020 will come with better questions! 🚴‍♀️🚴‍♀️🚴‍♀️

Have you issued your manual for building safe, protected, cycle infrastructure yet? Fully funded schemes to protect those undertaking active travel? Your work is essentially thoughts and prayers for safe cycling. Pathetic.

De Bilt is a suburb of Utrecht, really. This is induced demand, not necessary traffic. E.g. there's no need for the supermarket in the centre to have such a big (and well-used) car park. Plenty of other suburbs/villages do a much better job of it.

Hey look where I am! That new underpass everyone loves. It's a shame the rest of De Bilt is so shit for cycling. Really car sick for a small village. Full of Chelsea tractors. Feels unsafe.

Okay I'm off Twitter for a while again. If you're a UK voter, just remember to vote for whoever is most likely to beat the Conservatives where you live. Do some research, see what the split was at the 2017 election. TTFN!
