Don’t know that we are using more salt. On hills and areas where icing is more likely additional salt is often applied. We will pass the note to staff about the salt impact to cyclists.

The northbound local lanes of I-95/I-495 (Capital Beltway) are backed up for several miles from Exit 177 (U.S. Route 1), due to a tractor trailer crash earlier this afternoon. If possible, please avoid the area or use Metrorail during this evening's commute.

Sand has a whole other series of environmental impacts and in Old Town can cause the stormwater system to back up, so we avoid using sand and use sparingly in specific situations. The brine we use is salt-based, as is the salt for routine road treatment.
