I didn't realize that the private equity firm that presided over the demise of Payless Shoes, putting 16,00 people out of work, was the same one, Alden Global Capital, that is now eviscerating newspapers left and right.
Finance-driven capitalism was supposed to make the economy more dynamic. A failed shoe chain shows why it hasn’t happened.

The piece could have been more tightly written, but gets across the basic point: The new owners' lack of understanding of and appreciation for the essentials of the underlying business. Therefore, they tend to undervalue the expertise necessary to run that business.

Alden Global Capital is not a private equity fund. It is a hedge fund. Big difference.
