Paper didn’t edge out papyrus in Egypt until the 10th century. This paper fragment attests to two early adopters. It’s a copy of the Arabian nights, and it was reused for a legal document dated 266/879. It was first deciphered by a badass woman, Nabia Abbott.

It makes me sad to say, but part of why I post these pictures is fear that America is about to attack Iran, destroying a place and a people that I love dearly. I hope Americans can learn how their governments’ policies are damaging other nations.

Very cool podcast on Iranian jews, check it out! I had no idea that a lot of Iranian jews sided with the Iranian communist party (mostly because that's the only party that didn't disparage them or other minorities). Thanks and !

Another beautiful Sébah & Joaillier photo, though the original is larger (see it here ). Note the clock, the calendar (with the Rumi, Julian, Gregorian, and Islamic date), the framed photo, and the kabab!!! 😭😭😭

“As the history of coups in the Middle East has shown, overthrowing Maduro with the help of the military may rid Caracas of a dictator, but it will not rid the country of authoritarianism. And it might, as in Egypt, produce something even worse.”
