Not at the cost of the environment, people's lives, and at cost to the non-traveling majority. In summary, correct, it should pay these costs and impacts at time of use. I'd choose life, health, and better lives than cheap travel if we could swap em. 😁

...just isn't really a good representation of what the systemic break outs are. Nor does it show the peripheral system, costs, and huge impacts of maintaining the system as it to keep prices as low as they are.

Then one really has to take a systemic look. Sure, some routes have the right price/capacity demand mix to make some profit happen. So many simply don't, and the gap is made by pushing off costs to other places - like taxpayers. Breaking down IAD to JFK (or vice versa))...

Doubtful those taxes even cover the cost of porting and providing landing strips for the plane. That $70 bucks should easily be more. That breakdown isn't that on point. A lot of those "taxes" and "fees" don't even cover the $$ it took to provide the infrastructure. Then...

Travel isn't bad, but it really doesn't need to be an entitled right that everybody gets hugely discounted mechanized travel just to prop up other economic activity. When most of the world knows we need a more sustainable system worldwide. 🤨

My biggest crux is, just like cars, roads, and such, the Government dumps cash into it to keep us traveling - and by proxy creating vast waste, pollution, killing, etc under the premise that we must travel to prop up the existing world economic system. It's kind of nuts.

As for international, it is - as you've noted - a different scenario. Again though, it's manipulated by national subsidies and other things. But airlines can and do make some real cash on those routes. But it'd be nothing without vast airports built be general budget cash & more.

They routinely fall into collapse and require bailouts. Similar to the auto-manufacturers. The way the routes are propped up now by Governments is wildly insane IMHO. If they pulled the subsidies and accounting/lease practices we'd lose a massive # of routes and see huge ++$$.

They're already at their cheapest point they've ever been. The underlying issue is if people had to pay the actual at use cost of transport they'd mostly just not travel. Which environmentally would be a huge win. 😁 Consider that with almost every mode; cars, transit, trains...

Absolutely not. There's no way it could be cheaper. They're already pushing the limits of not making money and pushing off costs to Government subsidy and such.
