A fun thing to think about is that the most โ€œpopulistโ€ element of Trumpโ€™s economic agenda, and the part that nearly reelected him, was written by two ideologically heterodox Western Democrats and opposed by almost the entirety of the Republican caucus.

Anyway lots of people (including me) underestimated Bidenโ€™s resilience but if it were happening in a foreign country a president strongarming a weaker nation into being part of a scheme to neutralize the opposition party it would have been covered differently.

Much of the media was playing along with that effort until Trump got impeached over it, covering it in amoral fashion as a political strategy story about Trumpโ€™s devious and effective fixer Rudy Giuliani, and his brilliant strategy for neutralizing hapless Joe Biden.

One problem with peopleโ€™s analysis of Trumpโ€™s effort to rig the 2020 election is they often start with July or August, when in fact Trump used his authority as president to blackmail the leader of Ukraine into implicating Biden in a nonexistent crime more than a year ago.

โ€œSometimes voters of color prioritize other issues over racismโ€ is the story of how the Democratic Party became what it is today so letโ€™s be a little less precious about this entire conversation.

The Trump presidency began with him demanding the first black president show his papers, and it ends with his campaign demanding hundreds of thousands of black votes across multiple states be invalidated. The ship has sailed on โ€œis Trump racist.โ€ Sailed on Trumpists too.

*not *necessarily* why Trump improved his Latino vote share, I think itโ€™s not fully clear why yet, but weโ€™ll find out.

In other words the thing theyโ€™re actually mad about is white people being called racist, which they find outrageous and offensive, especially from the black former president who should shut up and be grateful. Trumpโ€™s racism though, is fine.

Theyโ€™re not mad that Obama said there are religiously conservative Latinos who vote Republican (though thatโ€™s not why Trump improved his vote share among Latinos.) Theyโ€™re mad because Obama called Trump racist, a description that logically extends to the people who voted for him.

NEW with โฆโฆโฉ, โฆโฆโฉ & โฆโฉ: Biden is considering Mike Morell, a defender of CIA torture and drone strikes, for CIA director. Progressive opposition is already building.

People keep saying that but a misplaced and dramatic sense of martyrdom is essential to Trumpโ€™s personality so itโ€™s not really strange that his toadies have adopted similar traits.

the only thing wrong you can do in trumpist analysis is not believe in Trump enough. There's no factual or interpretive error that is disqualifying other than doubting the divine infallibility of the god-king.
