New administrators left their meetings today in Fredericton with determination to "lead like a PIRATE" - with passion, immersion in work and relationships, rapport with others, asking and analyzing, transformation and enthusiasm. Best wishes to all heading back to school!

Student leaders told new administrators in ASD-W today not all graduates will head to university or they may change their mind on their field of study. Encourage and guide students to pursue different paths if that is their choice including the trades.

New administrators in ASD-W heard from student leaders today the best teachers, principals and vice-principals don't focus on discipline. They focus on respect, learning and making a personal connection with their students.

Leighton Scott said student leadership at school starts with teachers setting an example. Know your students' names. Don't just be "the guy in the office." Be a part of school activities, show us how to be leaders. We will follow.

Alex Morgan said students give back by peer tutoring but they can also help substitute teachers with class instruction on subject matter. They connect and provide leadership in the classroom. Grade 12 helping Grade 9, for example.

Megan Burtt said more emphasis on social studies and science is needed especially in early grades so the subject matter is more familiar and less scary in high school. Enrichment courses "stretch your mind" and give you a challenge.

Mikayla Annis told new administrators a good teacher can make or break a class or course. It's better to have good connections with all students even those who are harder to love because they know you care and take time for them.

ASD-W's meetings for new administrators wrapped up in Fredericton today. Student leaders and graduates Megan Burtt, Alex Morgan, Mikayla Annis and Leighton Scott earned a standing ovation for the views, concerns and hopes they presented about going to school in the district.
