Sharia anyone? Here's how I explain it - in as plain American English as I can -- featured on Wisconsin Public Television today.

Published in the same hours we began grieving with New Zealand. But if it helps counter the idea that women in hijab symbolize something dangerous, then I'm glad for the timing.

On the misuse of sharia in the Ilhan Omar dust-up, here's a quote from me featured in Rolling Stone (and I didn't even have to start a band!):

I'm so sorry! About your mother and about the delay! I missed this reply. Did you ever get compensation?

Did they give you any compensation yet? I bothered them for 5 days and finally got an offer of 600 Euros per person for our hardship (We all deserve a lot more, I know). Contact them! EVERY SINGLE PERSON on that flight should get at least their 600Euros compensation!

Was on the same flight! And let’s not forget they never gave us food during that whole 5.5 hours. And THEN they cancelled without any info on rebooking! Ever! Unprofessional and uncaring

We were on the same flight! No news for us at all!! And wouldn’t even confirm to orbitals that the flight was cancelled when I tried to rebook! Unbeleivably unprofessional! They’re now rebooking on a flight at 5:30 but did they tell us??? Nope. Uncaring

Re-posting in honor of election day. This is addressed to my American Muslim fellow citizens (but non-Muslim fellows are welcome to listen in -- especially if you're worried about sharia in the US).

That is the sort of statement that implies fiqh ignores the different mental states involved in each crime. It does not. The fuqaha all recognized that in rape, only one party has the required intent. And intent is a crucial element of the crime.

In case anyone is curious about the dangers of conflating zina and rape, and how it has (sadly) shown up in legislation in some Muslim-majority countries, I post this very old piece. The thesis still stands: rape is not zina.
