For some, yes. Here's my take, tho. If Alaska competition is perceived to be a step down, why do so many kids from here immediately succeed in the Lower 48? It's also interesting boys feel the need to leave Alaska, but girls do not. See Hebard, Pili, Davies, Robinson, Carstens.
