Born in 1907, C. Alfred “Chief” Anderson was known as the Father of Black Aviation. For six decades, he trained African-American aviators. Realizing the only way he’d learn to fly was with his own plane, he purchased a Velie Monocoupe.

Born in 1897, engineer/aviator William Powell encouraged African-Americans to enter the aviation field. He formed the Bessie Coleman Aero Club, open to all, in 1929. He also organized the first all-African American air show, drawing 15K.

Eugene Jacques Bullard (1895 – 1961) was the first African-American military pilot. Born in Columbus, Georgia, he flew for France, and was one of the few black combat pilots during World War I, along with the Ottoman Empire's Ahmet Ali Çelikten.
