time for a ! Our study of human executive function is out in today:
Using intracranial recordings in humans, the authors found decision conflict-related effects on firing rate in the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC), on spike-phase coupling in the dACC, and on...

In this study we sought to understand the neural correlates of cognitive control, the process by which the brain controls and optimized thoughts and behaviors. 2/n

To do so, we examined how the activity of individual human neurons and intracranial electrical signals from human neurosurgical patients undergoing monitoring for epilepsy and surgery for deep brain stimulation while they did a supercharged Stroop task. 3/n

The task creates a state of cognitive interference, while we recorded, brain activity from the prefrontal cortex, which is often implicated in control, specifically the anterior cingulate cortex and lateral prefrontal cortex. 4/n

As with previous studies, we found few neurons encoded that interference with their firing rates (though more in the cingulate). However, many more neurons encoded the interference with the timing of their action potentials, relative to the population activity. 5/n

There are some more cool findings in the paper, including a more info on how the cingulate and lateral prefrontal cortex interact and differences in temporal coding between the two areas, so check it out! 6/6
